How Are Surrogates Paid?

Surrogates with The Life Gifts are paid generously, reliably, and transparently, starting before the pregnancy begins. What you make as a surrogate with The Life Gifts is structured into monthly surrogacy payments, packaged in a way that gives you the freedom to plan ahead for you and your family. Our surrogates tell us they appreciate the empowerment and control this brings to their life.

Surrogates get paid monthly throughout the journey, with a first-time payment beginning at the time of your medical workup at your intended parents’ IVF clinic, additional payments before pregnancy, then moving into monthly payments once pregnancy is confirmed, with full compensation earned by 32 weeks, and additional payments as part of your postpartum recovery.
Can surrogacy compensation help me cut back on shifts during pregnancy?
Yes. Your base compensation allows flexibility so you can reduce work hours or take time off. If you encounter a medical issue at any time during your surrogacy journey, our Wage Support and Recovery Program provides you additional assistance, up to $30,000 per journey.

Taxes & Financial Considerations

Is surrogate compensation taxable?
The Life Gifts does not issue 1099s to surrogates. Please consult your tax professional.
Do surrogates have to report income to the IRS?
We recommend speaking with a tax advisor for personalized advice.
Does The Life Gifts issue 1099s to surrogates for her surrogate compensation?
No. We do not issue 1099s. Talk with a tax expert for guidance.
How much does a surrogate usually get paid, and is it taxed?
Surrogates can earn up to $75,000 and tax status varies by situation. Consult a tax advisor for accurate information.
Will surrogacy compensation impact my pension or retirement plan?
Any compensation could change your pension plan or retirement plan qualifications. It’s best to check with your plan provider to be sure.

Before & During Pregnancy

Do surrogates get paid if they do not get pregnant?
Yes. You begin receiving compensation for medical screening, starting IVF medications, and embryo transfer, even before pregnancy is confirmed.
Do surrogates get paid if the pregnancy ends before delivery?
Yes. You are compensated for the time and effort invested. Full base pay is earned by 32 weeks.
Will I have to travel for embryo transfer, and who covers travel expenses?
Yes, travel is sometimes necessary. All travel costs are covered by The Life Gifts.
Do surrogates have to pay for travel?
No. All required travel is covered and does not come out of your compensation. Further, we provide dedicated travel support to ensure your travel is as easy and convenient as possible.

After Birth: Breast Milk & Postpartum Support

Do surrogates get paid to pump breast milk for intended parents?
Yes. If you and your intended parents agree that you will provide breast milk for the intended parents’ baby, you’ll be compensated for pumping. If the parents decline, you may choose to donate breast milk which may provide you with additional compensation..
Will pumping to donate milk during pregnancy be allowed or compensated?
No. Pumping during pregnancy is not advised. Post-birth pumping may be compensated, depending on to whom you are providing the breast milk.

Insurance, Medical Bills & Out-of-Pocket Costs

Is a surrogate liable for any hospital bills?
No. All medical costs related to surrogacy are covered by The Life Gifts.
Do surrogates have any out-of-pocket expenses?
Our compensation package is designed to minimize any out-of-pocket costs and generally does not require receipts. You are required to maintain your own primary health insurance during your surrogacy journey.
Who will cover the costs associated with my surrogate pregnancy?
Costs are covered by The Life Gifts through your All-In Surrogate Care & Compensation Package, including your surrogacy medical expenses for obstetric care and delivery.
Do I need my own health insurance or do the intended parents provide it?
Yes, you need your own primary health insurance by the time you enter the matching process. We work with you to assist you in obtaining health insurance, should you not have it.  For surrogacy-related medical expenses, we work with you to maximize your insurance benefits, however, we fund directly all of your uncovered medical expenses related to your surrogacy journey.  You have no middle-man to deal with, nor potential for denials or exclusions as a surrogate; once you are in our program, 100% of your medical expenses associated with being a surrogate are covered.
How does surrogacy work with insurance?
We offer a dedicated team to directly cover any medical expenses associated with being a surrogate, covering everything from screening through postpartum recovery. We work with you to maximize any existing relevant coverage you may have.
Does my hospital’s insurance policy consider surrogacy an elective procedure?
Hospitals have different policies about what procedures are considered elective. Regardless of what hospital you are seen by or deliver at, The Life Gifts provides dedicated medical experts and direct payment to ensure that 100% of your medical expenses as a surrogate are covered.  No insurance middlemen, denials, or exclusions.
What types of costs are covered by insurance vs paid by intended parents?
Your primary health insurance covers your normal non-surrogacy medical expenses based on your plan, however, all surrogate-related medical expenses are funded directly by The Life Gifts.  Your intended parents play no direct role in paying for your medical bills.

Legal & Financial Structure

What contract specifies the financial obligations and responsibilities of all parties?
The Gestational Carrier Agreement (GCA) details all responsibilities, expectations, and payments between you and your intended parents.
What is a surrogacy escrow?
A financial account funded by the intended parents to securely hold and manage all payments related to the surrogacy journey.
Who manages and makes payments from my surrogate escrow account?
Your Match Experience Team and Finance Team at The Life Gifts coordinate all payments, so you don’t have to manage them yourself.

Referral Bonuses & Community Support

I know a woman who would be a great surrogate. Can I earn money by referring her as a surrogate?
Yes. You can earn up to $650 for every successful referral, plus your friend earns bonuses too. Referral payments are unlimited.
How do surrogates handle questions about surrogate mother pay?
Many surrogates prefer to keep details private. Our peer groups, support forums, and educational resources help you navigate these conversations.
What bonuses are available for experienced surrogates?
