What happens when you apply to be a surrogate?
Once you meet the initial surrogate requirements, the next step is to undergo our unique surrogate application process. This includes interviews and medical and psychological evaluations to evaluate your whole story and help determine if becoming a surrogate is the right fit for you. Each step is designed to ensure safe, successful matches between you and intended parents.
Quick Application + Phone Call
Our surrogate engagement team reviews your application for the basic surrogate requirements (such as age, citizenship, and prior pregnancies) and we follow up with you quickly, typically within 1-3 days. Weâll be excited to get to know you, answer your questions, and walk you through the journey.

Screening
- Our coordinator will conduct a journey kickoff call with you. Weâll make a plan with you for a great experience.
- Complete paperwork. Weâll walk through a packet of information to get everything organized, such as getting ahold of your medical records.
- Our nurses will thoroughly assess your medical document for any medical red flags and complications.
Not sure about a past condition? We will work with you to determine if itâs disqualifying or not. Some arenât.
Psychological Assessment
A licensed mental health professional meets with you and, if applicable, your partner for 3 hours to take a deeper dive into all things surrogacy, including the most sensitive elements of the experience. Three hours may sound like a lot, and it is; we offer resources like videos to help you feel prepared. Think of it as an emotional wellness check â not just for surrogacy but for life. And know that participants have a wonderful experience, with high satisfaction ratings.
Final Steps
- We prepare a personalized financial package â just for you â and walk through the program, like our fourth trimester support, that we offer to every gestational carrier.
- We check for legal or financial concerns for you and any adults in your household and do a virtual visit to learn more about your household.
Acceptance
Once all evaluations are complete, weâll work with you to prepare your profile and tell your unique story. You are now a The Life Gifts surrogate! Our matching team, experts that are dedicated to our surrogates, will meet with you to learn more about your preferences and priorities for the intended parents you dream of helping. Youâll be connected with the right intended parents and begin the next part of your surrogacy journey as you prepare to visit their fertility clinic.
